National A Cappella & Choral Convention 2025

“Ensemble Leadership” utilizes theories of ‘courageous followership’ (I. Chaleff) and understanding individual strengths non-directing members have and can contribute during rehearsal. Through a rehearsal simulation, singers will learn strategies in how they can more deeply engage in the learning process that will contribute to group sound, morale, and even make rehearsal more efficient. Not only will current and aspirational music directors expand their pedagogical toolkit on facilitating rehearsals, but members in non-directing roles will be empowered to ensure group success.

Get ready for an interactive and engaging crash course on music technology for vocalists! This will be an opportunity to collaborate on a session exploring recording tools, audio effects, and more. A class designed for anyone who wants to get better at rhythm! Tired of your music sounding stale and un-funky? Want to learn the tools to create tasty grooves that will have your audience dancing in the aisle? Stop in, and together we’ll learn: -Basic vocal percussion techniques -How the bass and VP fit together -A few standard grooves, and what makes them tick -Exercises to help you groove even harder!

Have you ever felt awkward on stage? Do you struggle knowing what to do with your hands during a song? Do you know your strengths and challenges as a mover? In this short, interactive session, singers of all levels will have the opportunity to explore movement through an individualized and no-pressure vibe session. We will map some of the basic physical vocabulary we can use to better convey the meaning of a song while feeling relaxed and in-control of our performance.

Is there a cappella in the telematic embrace? Can we bridge the dichotomy between traditional contemporary a cappella practice and "the computer"? In this class, Mel will discuss the role of technology in contemporary vocal music and a cappella. We will listen to examples, dive into an a cappella studio session and review beginning key concepts of post-production. Bring any questions you may have about vocal production, music technology, and/or the business of recording.

Warm ups are the director's chance to develop the tone, musicianship, and communication style of your singers. In this session, Michael will give hands-on advice, tips, exercises, and vocalises to help your singers develop both their individual and group voice so you can more efficiently work on repertoire, increase their vocal musicianship, and maximize the beautiful noise your group can make!
